General Tips

  • Use the singular forms of words rather than plural. For example, search for hasp rather than hasps.

  • Omit common words such as the, and, of, or etc. and start with fewer words.

  • Try a shortened form or fragment of the word if you are not having any luck. For example, try subl instead of sublimation.

  • To find general categories of items, use one of the two menus on the left side of the screen.

Using the Search Box

  • At the top of any page, simply enter your search terms separated by spaces. The search occurs in a Boolean AND fashion. For example, searching on extinguisher 15 lb ABC will find only those products that have all four words in their product descriptions - regardless of the order in which they appear in the description.

  • Special characters such as umlauts etc. are difficult to search on, even if you copy and paste them. For example, Büchner funnels will not turn up if you search on Büchner, but should turn up if you search on Buchner.

  • When entering volumes or amounts, the unit is separated from the number with a space. For example, if you are searching for a 250 mL flask, enter 250 mL rather than 250mL.

  • Use quotation marks to specify an exact phrase. For example, "250 mL" will find all product descriptions containing those two terms together in that order. That means you'll find all 250 mL flasks, but not a roll of 250 labels. Note: If you need to use a single quotation mark or apostrophe to search or exclude a size (such as 5" label or -10' banner, avoid using other quotation marks in the search or you risk confusing the search engine.

  • You can use a negative sign in front of terms you do not wish to match. For example, if you wanted to list all 250 Schlenk flasks except those with 19/22 and 24/40 joints or glass stopcocks, you could search on Schlenk flask "250 mL" -19/22 -24/40 -"glass stopcock". Negative signs within quotes are treated as regular negative signs and those within words are treated as hyphens.

Managing Search Results

    If your searchs finds any matches, up to 99 of these will be available for display. To help you manage all that data, the search results page has some handy features:

  • Sort results by: You can sort your results by increasing/decreasing price, item number or alphabetically by the product description. As soon as you change an entry in this menu the page will reload - there is no need to hit Search again.

  • Show 10/25/50 results per page: You can have 10, 25 or 50 results displayed per page. This preference remains until you change it again. Customers who are logged in will have this preference remembered for their next visit. As soon as you change an entry in this menu the page will reload - there is no need to hit Search again.

  • Show all sizes, styles, replacement parts.... This is normally checked, but it can return a lot of results as every size, style, replacement part etc. for an item is itself a unique store item. For example, if one searches for Viton o-ring, there will be 51 matches. If you uncheck the Show All... check box, the search will return only 1 of the 51 different sizes of Viton o-rings that we sell. As soon as you change the checkmark status the page will reload - there is no need to hit Search again.

  • Page# - is a convenient way to page through your results pages. You can go to the specified page number or use the Previous or Next links to page backward and forward.
