Venting of flammable storage cabinets presents a conundrum. It would be great to vent the cabinet to reduce odors, prevent corrosion, and prevent employees from inhaling toxic or irritating vapors when opening the cabinet, however, venting provides air flow through a cabinet during a fire, thus defeating the operational design of the unit.
Justrite's Safe-T-Vent™ thermally-actuated cabinet vent dampers give you the best of both worlds. These allow one to vent flammable solvent storage cabinets without sacrificing operational integrity in the event of fire. The dampers connect to your properly designed venting system using 2-inch nominal NPT Schedule 40 steel pipe. Each damper has a fusible link that melts at 165° F (74 °C) and closes the valve plate in the event of a fire. This protects the cabinet and its contents by stopping the flow of air through the cabinet vents. In addition, its heavy duty stainless steel construction reduces heat transfer and provides frictional spark resistance as required for hazardous locations while brass bushings and washer reduce friction and ensure reliable valve actuation. The clever reversible design blocks flow in either direction making installation a breeze.
Two dampers are required per cabinet, one for the fresh air intake and the other for the exhaust. The price shown here is for ONE damper only. Complete details on this product are available in this two-page PDF download. A detailed technical discussion of safety cabinet venting with code references is also available for download.
Owners of unvented cabinets looking to control undesired odors and VOC exposure should consider a Justrite VaporTrap™ activated-carbon filter (item # J-29916) instead.
