Ansul AFP3B 3% Fluoroprotein Foam Concentrate combines hydrolyzed protein with fluorochemical surfactants, foam stabilizers (metal salts), bactericide, corrosion inhibitors, freeze point depressants and solvents to provide superior fire and vapor suppression for Class B hydrocarbon fuel fires. This protein-based foam concentrate is intended for forceful or gentle firefighting applications using most conventional air-aspirating foam discharge equipment at a 3% dilution with fresh, salt, or hard water.
Ansul AFP3B foam solution utilizes two suppression mechanisms:
- The foam blanket blocks oxygen supply to the fuel and suppresses fuel vapor. Protein based foam agents produce a foam blanket with very good heat stability and burn-back resistance.
- The water content of the foam solution produces a cooling effect for additional fire suppression.
Ansul 3% Fluoroprotein Foam Concentrate is intended for use on Class B hydrocarbon fuels having low water solubility such as various crude oils, gasolines, diesel fuels, aviation fuels, etc.. It is not suitable for use on fuels having appreciable water solubility (polar solvents), i.e., methyl and ethyl alcohol, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. It can also be used with foam-compatible dry chemical extinguishing agents to provide even greater fire protection capability. This agent is ideal for fixed, semi-fixed, and emergency response firefighting applications such hydrocarbon fuel storage tanks, hydrocarbon fuel industrial/processing facilities, flammable liquid containment areas, docks and on-board marine systems, and low-temperature operations.
This product replaces Ansul's prior formulation (part # 73972) which was discontinued in 2018. The new environmentally-mindful ANSUL AFP3B 3% Fluoroprotein Concentrate formulation contains short-chain, C-6 fluorochemicals manufactured in a process which produces no PFOS and the product does not break down to yield PFOA.
Statement on the use of perfluoroalkyl-containing firefighting foams
California has banned most firefighting aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) that contain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) effective January 1, 2022. We will no longer sell this product to users or purchasers in California. Ansul now offers a non-fluorinated foam product for Class B fires which is available as item # 50071. Ansul is continuously revamping its firefighting foam product line and as additional non-fluorinated alternatives become available we will offer them for sale.
Safety Emporium is unable to offer advice on the application, use, environmental fate, or health effects of these materials and offers them in good faith given the need within the firefighting community and given the manufacturer's implied warranty of merchantability. All potential purchasers should consult pertinent local, state, federal, and international regulations regarding PFAS-containing products and seek out emerging health and environmental data and guidance before choosing to purchase or use this product per the manufacturer's recommendations.
